Sorry Nolan, the Rockies are not ‘in the hunt’

“It’s way better than it was last year,” Nolan Arenado said on Monday. “At this point last year we were nowhere to be found, we’re definitely in the hunt right now and there is some ground for us to make up.”

Those optimistic comments were followed by a pair of embarrassing home losses to the Tampa Bay Rays, a team currently ranked last in the AL East.

Mistakes and bad pitching plagued the Rockies this week and, let’s be honest, pretty much cemented the fate of the 2016 season.

The verdict: The Rox are better than last year, with a lot of talent and potential, but still no where near ready to make a serious run at the play-offs.

“We’re always frustrated when we lose a series, especially at home,” Rockies manager Walt Weiss said following Wednesday afternoon’s 11-3 beating. “But we’ll focus on what’s ahead of us.”

More from Colorado Rockies

What’s next is a four-game home series against the Atlanta Braves, followed by difficult road trips to Baltimore and New York, where they’ll play 4 games against the Mets to close out the month of July.

The big question for the Rockies is what to do in advance of the trade deadline, which is now only 10 days away.  More than likely, it’s time to begin selling off pieces and looking for ways to build strength and depth on the roster for next year.

It has been reported that the Washington Nationals are interested in center fielder Charlie Blackmon.  Some are also wondering if now might be the time to move Carlos Gonzalez in order to get maximum value for a player who only has one year left on his deal.

The Rockies are currently 13.5 games out of first place in the NL West and remain 8 games back in the National League’s wild card race.
