NFL Trade Rumors: Broncos showing “serious interest” in Wes Welker

That came out of nowhere. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported earlier that the Broncos are in serious consideration for signing Wes Welker. A few thoughts I’d like to mention.

First off, Welker is not was he used to be, and isn’t going to be nearly as good with the Broncos as he was with the Patriots. The offense that Belichick and the Patriots runs has made Welker into the receiver he is today, as he was a backup and a nobody before signing with New England years ago. I’m not saying you shouldn’t be excited if he actually does sign with the Broncos, but Brady to Welker will go down as one of the best quarterback and wide receiver combinations of all time.

Next, the wide receiving core will be the best in the league next season if they are able to pull this off. Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker are both third year studs, and Welker will be great out of the slot. I have been saying this whole offseason that Denver doesn’t need to pay a lot for another wide receiver, but the idea of them getting Welker is great, just because of the way he will be used in the slot. He’ll open up shots downfield for Thomas and Decker can do his thing underneath and learn off of Welker.

Overall, Welker is a better version of Brandon Stokley. They are both used the same way and Welker has posted better career numbers. Nothing is official yet, and there’s a chance things fall apart, but Broncos fans should be extremely excited if they are able to pull off a deal for one of the leagues best receivers.
