There are layers to the intrigue that surrounds today’s game between the Washington Redskins and Denver Broncos. There are the connections of seasons past, as Mike Shanahan returns to face his former longtime franchise as Washington’s head coach. There is the continued improvement of Robert Griffin III as he gets more comfortable as a runner coming off knee surgery and thinks of new reasons to talk about himself. As then there is the current standings for each team: the Broncos have to contest with a loaded division and try to keep up with the Kansas City Chiefs, while the Redskins need only to string together a handful of wins to be relevant in the soft NFC East.
To date both of these teams have struggled to stop the other team and have engaged in a number of high-scoring affairs. Each team will seek a boost on defense this afternoon. The Broncos will hope that the return of middle linebacker Wesley Woodyard will restore some order on that side of the ball. The Redskins will hope to exploit the struggles of the Denver offensive line with pass rushers Brian Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan.
