Jhoulys Chacin‘s 2014 season debut didn’t go as planned as the right-hander was rusty to say the least. Mets pitcher Dillon Gee would outduel him as New York came away with the win, 5-1 avoiding the four-game sweep.

Chacin’s first inning was rough as he gave up back-to-back singles to Juan Lagares (13-game hit streak) and Daniel Murphy. Two batters later, Curtis Granderson would single to right to score Lagares giving the Mets the early 1-0 advantage.

Jumping ahead to the top half of the third inning, Chacin would find himself in trouble yet again. After a four-pitch walk to Daniel Murphy, David Wright would rope an RBI double off the wall in center field, bringing in Murphy to take the 2-0 lead. Chacin would walk Granderson right after the Wright at-bat as Chris Young would collect an RBI double of his own, giving the Mets the 3-0 lead. The very next inning, Juan Lagares would collect a two out double to center bringing Daniel Murphy to the plate. He would double into the gap in left center to bring in Lagares which made it 4-0 Mets in the fourth.

The one bright spot for the Rockies this game would be Nolan Arenado, who doubled to left field in the bottom half of the fourth to extend his hitting streak to an MLB best 24-games. Meanwhile, the Rockies struggled to figure out Mets starter Dillon Gee. He would pitch six strong innings, giving up six hits, one walk and striking out five as Colorado couldn’t muster a run against him.

The Mets would collect one more run in the top half of the seventh to make it 5-0 as Lucas Duda doubled to deep center, plating Chris Young. Colorado would strike for their only run of the game in the bottom of the ninth as Justin Morneau hit a solo home run to right field off of Jeurys Familia for his 7th of the season.
