With Jordan Lyles toeing the rubber for the Colorado Rockies, you would think they would be in good hands. On Saturday night however, Lyles was wild as he walked six batters in just 3 1/3 innings, picking up his first loss of the season. Colorado’s bats also scuffled, grounding into five double-plays — not a winning recipe.
San Diego would strike first in the top half of the first inning as Jordan Lyles struggled with command and didn’t look comfortable on the mound whatsoever. After back-to-back walks to Everth Cabrera and Seth Smith, Yonder Alonso would double to deep left plating Cabrera and Smith to give the Padres a 2-0 lead. Troy Tulowitzki would hit a solo home run off of Robbie Erlin in the bottom half of the inning to bring the lead to within one, 2-1 Padres.
The Friars jumped all over Lyles in the second inning as Seth Smith would bring in Chris Denorfia on a two-run home run to straight-away center to go ahead 4-1. In the top half of the third inning, Yasmani Grandal would ground out to Tulo at short as Yonder Alonso scored to second, advancing Will Venable to second. Pitcher Robbie Erlin would help out his own cause with an RBI single to left, plating Venable to give the Padres a 6-1 lead.
Colorado would make an attempt to get back into the ball game as Carlos Gonzalez would hit a sacrifice-fly to left field in the bottom half of the fourth to score Drew Stubbs — bringing the lead to within four. In the bottom half of the fifth, Jordan Pacheco would collect an RBI single to right, scoring Justin Morneau as Colorado trailed 6-3 entering the sixth.
Carlos Gonzalez would come up to bat with two on and would smoke an RBI double over the head of Venable in center to score Stubbs and Tulowitzki, bringing the Padres lead down to 6-5. In the top half of the seventh inning however, pinch-hitter Carlos Quentin would hit a no-doubt, two-run home run to left field off of reliever Chris Martin to push the lead to three. The Padres would go on to win the game, 8-5.
