MLB Draft 2014: Colorado Rockies Select Kyle Freeland, LHP, Evansville
By Andrew Dill
Kyle Freeland struck out six in two innings and combined with Jeff Hoffman on a shutout of Chatham.
With the eighth overall pick in the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Colorado Rockies select Kyle Freeland, LHP, Evansville.
This came as no surprise to me where I had Colorado taking the southpaw in my mock draft.
Colorado was hoping to see right-hander Aaron Nola – who was the SEC pitcher of the year, fall to them at eight but was taken a spot ahead by the Philadelphia Phillies at 7th overall. Having Freeman available at number eight was just what Colorado wanted to see.
Freeland is listed at 6’4″, 190 which is an excellent frame. The southpaw went 10-2 this season with a low ERA of 1.90 for Evansville University. He would strike out 128 batters while walking just 13.
He is also a local product from Denver, Colorado where he went to Thomas Jefferson High. He set the Colorado prep record with 145 strikeouts back in 2011.
