The Insane Brilliance of the Colorado Rockies

Maybe all this dysfunction is really the plan for the Colorado Rockies, think about it. If they were just a bad team in late July, no one would be talking about them. Maybe there’s some sort of insane brilliance to the circus that continues to be the Rockies; the past weekend is the perfect example.

In ring number one we present to you the Troy Tulowitzki fiasco. It all started Friday night when the Rockies had a Tulowitzki jersey giveaway night, and even that blew up in their faces.
Tulowitzki’s name was spelled wrong on 15,000 jerseys. (Tulowizki). There are so many things wrong with this picture. First, how many people looked at these jerseys and missed it? He’s your best player and before this latest injury, Tulowitzki was the leading contender for MVP of the National League. Tulowitzki has all ready hinted that he would welcome a trade, and the Rockies response is to embarrass him.
Ok so someone made a mistake with the jerseys, it happens. Well not to everyone but it happens in Colorado. Who in the world made the decision to go ahead and give them out? Throw them back in the box and offer the fans a free drink, a free hotdog and a voucher to pick up the jersey at a later date. The spelling mistake was one thing; the decision to go ahead with the giveaway was mind blowing.
Oh but we’re not done with the Tulowitzki act, he shows up in the first row of a New York Yankees game on Sunday. Keep in mind his teammates are suffering through another loss on Sunday, and their so-called leader is hanging out with his man crush Derek Jeter.
Yes I know he said he was just paying his respects to Jeter who is retiring this season, but it looks really bad. It looks like Tulowitzki has bailed out on the Rockies who say it would take a lot to trade him. Great, this is going to end well.
In the third ring, we have the continued play on the field that would make the Bad News Bears cringe. The latest example is a botched rundown versus the Pittsburgh Pirates that was just terrible
Josh Harrison of the Pirates somehow managed to avoid five throws in the rundown and make his way from second to third base while the Rockies were running around doing; I don’t know what they were doing. Keep in mind that the whole thing started because Josh Rutledge missed a simple tag at the beginning of the play. He just flat missed him, and that led to the latest Rockies entry in ESPN’s Not Top Ten. The Rockies could have their own category on that list.
In the center ring, the ringmaster Dick Monfort. In spite of the disaster on the field and the public relations nightmare off the field, Monfort has repeated to anyone who will listen that there are unlikely to be any changes in the offseason.
At first, the thought of no changes makes no sense to anyone with a brain but think about it from Monfort’s perspective.
It’s brilliant; it’s insane but also brilliant. On the first weekend of Denver Broncos training camp that included an open practice at Sports Authority Field, the Rockies were in the news. They were a topic on sports talk radio; the jersey fiasco led some newscasts and was actually trending on Twitter. Usually when the Broncos start training camp, the Rockies quietly fade into the woodwork.
Not this year, they are making news. It’s sad news and the franchise is a complete train wreck but people are talking about them.
It’s brilliant; in its own perverse, depraved and sad sort of way but brilliant nonetheless.
