Colorado State Head Football coach, Jim McElwain took some shots at Denver Mayor Michael Hancock on Monday.Mayor Hancock mispronounced the coach’s name during the trophy presentation after his Rams beat the Colorado Buffaloes in the Rocky Mountain Showdown on Friday night.
It was towards the end of McEwain’s normal Monday press conference when he said:
"“The mayor doesn’t even know the head ball coach’s name, I guess that really shows where we are and where I am as a program,” McElwain said in disgust.“Boy, that makes a guy feel good. The guy giving you the trophy can’t spit your name out?” McElwain continued. “Shows you how much they care about Colorado State right?”"
As alumni of Colorado State and a fan of both the football program and McElwain, I say it’s about time. It’s about time someone with some credentials stand up and point out what we all know. For too long know, Colorado State has been treated like the ugly step-child and I’m sick of it. So is McElwain apparently and if he’s not hiding his disdain anymore, then neither am I.
I’m talking about people like Mayor Hancock who probably couldn’t find CSU if he had a map. The people on sports talk radio that talk about the CSU-CU game as if it was just a speed bump for the buffaloes. I guess that speed bump was a little bigger than everyone thought, uh?
I get that the Buffaloes lead the overall series and it’s not even close, but CU fans who point to that reeks of all those Oakland Raiders fans who live in the 1970’s. I don’t care if Colorado beat us in 1956; the thing that matters is now and right now, Colorado State is the better football team.
This is another one of my favorites; CU is a PAC-12 school and we should never lose to a Mountain West School like CSU. In theory that might be true but here’s some harsh reality; the Buffaloes would not finish in the top half of the Mountain West.
The final was 31-17 and if the Rams don’t fumble on the first possession of the second half, the final is probably 38-10.
It’s possible and maybe even probable that Mayor Hancock just slipped but McElwain has obviously had enough of the disrespect towards Colorado State, and every Ram around the nation should stand up and applaud him.
In the end it’s all ok because the Centennial Cup is sitting comfortably at home in Fort Collins and based on the current state of both programs, it’s going to stay there for awhile.
We look forward to accepting the trophy again next year from Mayor Hitchcock.
