The Denver Broncos received great news Tuesday night per Ed Werder, as the NFL and NFLPA reportedly came to an agreement, resulting in the reinstatement of wide receiver Wes Welker. Welker was initially suspended for the first four games of the season after violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
Welker, 33, has been desperately missed in terms of stretching the field and his presence in the red-zone. However, Welker has been slowed down by concussions in which he suffered his most recent one on Aug. 23rd against the Houston Texans in preseason action, resulting in his third concussion in a 10-month span. He reportedly has been cleared medically to play.
During the record-breaking 2013 season, Welker was a key part of the Super Bowl run. Wes went on to catch 73 balls from Peyton Manning, resulting in 778 yards and 10 touchdowns. Welker went on to miss three regular season games due to concussion but was available for the playoffs.
Don’t expect Denver to rush Welker right into things, as they should take it slow with the veteran slot-receiver. Denver reportedly said they would like to run more out-routes with Welker, rather than risking injury/concussions with slant-routes across the middle of the field.
We will see how much playing-time Welker gets if he indeed plays Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, but for the long-haul, getting him back adds a scarier dimension to the offseason.
