Rookie of the Year: Tyler Matzek, SP.
It seemed as if the more Tyler Matzek took the mound, the better he got. Tyler made his Major League debut on Jun. 11th against the Atlanta Braves, picking up his first win. The southpaw pitched seven strong innings, yielding two earned runs on five hits, including 7 strikeouts.
Matzek would then hit a speed bump after that, possessing a record of 2-4 with a 5.30 ERA entering the month of August.
The month of September sure proved just how good the former 1st round pick (11th overall) in 2009 could be. Matzek dazzled, going 2-2 with a 1.69 ERA in four starts. What’s even more impressive is the fact he recorded 27 strikeouts during those four starts (26.2 innings).
Looking at the rotation now as we speak, Matzek, in my opinion, has earned the spot in next years rotation pending injury.
