Richie Incognito Visiting the Denver Broncos

It’s being reported by multiple sources that the Denver Broncos are visiting with free agent guard Richie Incognito and while a signing has not happened, the Broncos are exploring their options. Jay Glazer of Fox Sports was the first to report the story.

For those of you who may not remember, Incognito was released by the Miami Dolphins last year after being involved in a bullying scandal involving Jonathan Martin. Incognito is a very good player and would definitely help the Broncos offensive line, but there would be some risk.

Even before the bullying incident, Incognito has had some anger issues both on and off the field. Having said that, it might be worth the risk for the Broncos who are seeking answers on the offensive line.

Chances are that any deal would be team friendly and the Broncos would be able to release him at any time if it did not work out. The Broncos also have a very strong locker room with a number of leaders starting with Peyton Manning. Incognito is always going to be different but a strong locker room is more likely to be able to handle what he brings. What he brings on the field is what the Broncos have to be strongly considering.

Incognito would immediately bring a level of nastiness that the Broncos need up front, especially in the running game. He was widely considered one of the better guards in the league. The Broncos would probably put Incognito at right guard next to Louis Vasquez who moved to right tackle, and that would be pretty imposing for defenses.

The Broncos, even though they’ve been better in recent weeks, have struggled to run the football and Incognito could help that immediately. He would also shore up the middle on pass protection which is always a priority for a quarterback like Manning who likes to step up in the pocket.

Vasquez has solidified the right tackle spot it appears and Ryan Clady has regained his Pro Bowl form on the left side. If the Broncos can fix the middle part of the line by signing Incognito, then it’s worth the risk.

As of now, no decision has been made but I would expect there to be one rather quickly. My guess is if the Broncos decide to sign him, they would want him to practice on Wednesday.
