Colorado Rockies avoid arbitration with Tyler Chatwood, Jordan Lyles, and Drew Stubbs
By Andrew Dill
The Colorado Rockies retained three players Wednesday afternoon, avoiding arbitration with starting pitchers Tyler Chatwood and Jordan Lyles, while doing the same with outfielder Drew Stubbs. Nick Groke of The Denver Post reports that Chatwood inked a two-year deal with Colorado while Lyles and Stubbs is for one-year. Lyles and Stubbs were both surprise players last season for Colorado.
Personally, I believe Tyler Chatwood could be a solid 3-4 pitcher in any starting rotation. The right-hander had his 2014 season cut short after undergoing reconstructive surgery on his elbow (Tommy John) during the month of July. Chatwood is only 24-years-old but has had some problems in the past with his elbow. Chatwood broke out with the Rockies during the 2013 season after earning a record of 8-5, accumulating an ERA of just 3.15. Chatwood went on to pitch 111.1 innings that season, giving up just 39 earned runs (44 runs) while striking out 66.

Jordan Lyles surprised many with his first-half performance by earning a record of 6-1, which only went downhill after suffering a broken bone in his non-throwing hand. Lyles finished off the 2014 campaign with a 7-4 record, earning an ERA of 4.33. Lyles was acquired in the offseason along with Brandon Barnes in exchange for Dexter Fowler.
Drew Stubbs’ stats were likely due to the hitter friendly Coors Field, but it was impressive nonetheless. Stubbs hit a career-best .289/.482/.821 with 22 doubles, 4 tripes, 15 home runs, and 43 RBI’s. One problem with Stubbs is his plate discipline. The veteran continues to strikeout at an alarming rate, 136 strikeouts last season but it was his fewest since 2009 (49 strikeouts in 42 games).
