Denver Broncos have reportedly reached out to defensive coordinator Wade Phillips

The Denver Broncos cleaned house in terms of coaching personnel, naming former offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak as the teams new head coach, replacing John Fox. The team also let offensive and defensive coordinator Adam Gase and Jack Del Rio walk, both landing jobs in Chicago and Oakland respectively. Now Denver has their eyes set on a defensive coordinator.

With Denver failing to grant permission from the Cincinnati Bengals to interview defensive backs coach Vance Joseph, Denver shifted gears by inquiring about Wade Phillips. Phillips is no stranger to Gary Kubiak as he was member of Kubiak’s staff from 2011 to 2013 as a member of the Houston Texans.

Then again, Phillips is no stranger to the Mile High City. Phillips was Denver’s defensive coordinator from 1989 to 1992 while serving as head coach in 1993 and 1994, collecting an overall record of 16-17. Phillips was fired after the ’94 season in which the team finished 7-9.

From reading around the internet, Bronco fans seem to be against the move, which is understandable. Phillips is familiar with the 3-4 based defense in which Denver runs a 4-3. In Jeff Legwold’s ESPN article, he notes it may “require some juggling of personnel.”

"The situation will depend on whether the team runs a 3-4 defense, as Phillips has in his time as a defensive play-caller, or some adjustment on Phillips’ part to meld the Broncos’ personnel into a 4-3, 3-4 mix."

Seeing Denver run a 3-4 defense would be quite odd, yet they have the personnel to do so. They have fast, talented linebackers in Brandon Marshall, Danny Trevathan, Von Miller, and Nate Irving. Also, stout lineman up front in DeMarcus Ware, Derek Wolfe, and Malik Jackson. Denver’s top defensive tackle Terrance Knighton is a UFA (Unrestricted Free Agent) and has said he would take a pay-cut to be a Bronco. We will see how it all turns out this offseason.

I’m indifferent on the possibility of signing Wade Phillips, but time will tell. All I know is I want the Broncos to be in the best position to hoist the Lombardi Trophy at the end of next season.
