Getting to Know You: Kyle Freeland Colorado Rockies Pitcher
Wishing Kyle Freeland a belated May 14th birthday.
Kyle Freeland is an active Colorado Rockies pitcher who can boast being a Denver native. I don’t know how often the local boy makes good but it is fun when it happens. I do know many boys and girls grow up hopeful with that very dream in their little heads when they sleep, and for some, a very, very, small few, that dream comes true. You wear those colors. Hoist that trophy. You stand on that mound. Kyle Freeland is one of those few. He now resides in Scottsdale, Arizona in the off season but you will never take the Rockies out of this kid.
Freeland attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Denver, Colorado as a youngster. Holm Elementary School still employs his mother as well as was where he spent his earlier academic career. After high school Freeland set off to the University of Evansville in Indiana for college. He was drafted after high school by Philadelphia in the 35th round in 2011 but chose not to commit and attended college instead. He was later rated the seventh over all player in the 2014 Draft by MLB.com and fifth by Baseball America.
After being drafted, Freeland started making his way in Grand Junction. He was seeing his first successes with the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League and earned the Rising Star award in 2015. 2016 was ripe for movement and he made double A and Triple A debuts. It wouldn’t be until April 7 this year that Kyle Freeland makes his big league splash. He made his debut against the Dodgers and was tied for first among Major league rookie with 11 wins. Freeland also gets to boast about his first home run May 21 at Cincinnati, just for funsies. He has loads of great statistics that you can get lost in for days if you want and you can follow him at @KFREE_21 on Twitter. Get to know a Rocky today!
