The Colorado Buffaloes players voted and seven players were named team captains for the 2018 season.

A ritual that happens every summer, over 100 players on the Colorado football team voted and the captains were announced.

Seven players, including six seniors were selected and there was a surprising omission on the list.

Here are the seven captains:

  1. Rick Gamboa-LB-Senior
  2. Kabion Ento-WR-Senior
  3. Jay MacIntyre-WR-Senior
  4. Juwann Winfree-WR-Senior
  5. Nick Fisher-S-Senior
  6. Alex Kinney-P-Senior
  7. Aaron Haigler-OT-Junior

Gamboa was a given–he was a team captain last season and exudes elite leadership qualities. Simply put, he is the lifeblood of the Buffs defense.

Three receivers made the list including the coaches son, Jay MacIntyre. Just like his dad, Jay is a vocal leader in the locker room and is as tough as they come within his 5’10 185-pound frame.

Alex Kinney has NFL aspirations and will likely be named to the Ray Guy watch list this season.

Coach Mike MacIntyre, who allows his players to nominate and vote for captains in private, was happy with the teams’ decision:

"“I’m excited about the guys who they elected to be the captains for the 2018 Buffaloes,” CU head coach Mike MacIntyre said.  “Their teammates did a great job in picking them out.  This is something the players have always taken seriously, and this year they deliberated for 45 minutes.  I actually told them four-to-six captains is an optimum number, and they asked if we could have seven, which is fine since they felt that strongly about this group.  They’re going to do a great job and I’m really pleased with the players that they elected.”"

The surprising omission to the list is quarterback Steven Montez, who I profiled a few weeks’ back.

Montez, a redshirt junior, was named to the Maxwell Watch List entering the 2018 season but was not voted as a captain by his peers.

Typically, the quarterback is the leader of the offense both on the field and off. Personally, I have not heard of any distrust with Montez as the Buffs signal caller, but it is fair to say he is nowhere near the leader of Sefo Liufau who was a multi-year captain when he led the ball club.

With the captains now in place, the team can begin to focus on their Rocky Mountain Showdown date with Colorado State on Friday, August 31st.
