Denver Nuggets: 3 Things They Need to do for the Second Half
Staying true to themselves matters.
Denver Nuggets President Tim Connelly and his front office staff were offered/accepted extensions from KSE. The move was anticipated, Josh Kroenke had been negotiating for a while on the extension.
The New Orleans Pelicans firing of GM Dell Demps may have accelerated the Nuggets push to extend the architect of this team. Losing Connelly would be disastrous to the franchise as we’ve seen when Masai Ujiri departed for Toronto. The Nuggets are set in the front office, they have the right coach and they have the right roster.
There’s a good reason they made no moves at the February trade deadline, they didn’t need to. Of the players available, even Anthony Davis, can anyone say that there was a player out there that could significantly improve the Nuggets fortunes?
A player like Davis, one of the best in the league, seems like the thing that would push the Nuggets over-the-top but what bears consideration is how a player like Davis impacts the Nuggets roster. It’s even something Denver will have to deal with on a smaller scale with the return of IT. Guys that need the ball in their hands do not easily fit on this team. Denver’s budding superstar, Nikola Jokic is the focal point of the offense, it would seem counterproductive to rock that boat.
Denver entered the season with the goal of making the playoffs. It appears they have done that so they are already ahead of their curve. We’ll have to endure all the free agent talk over the summer with a big pool of top-end players set to become UFA. Denver already has a gem in the wings with the said, aforementioned Michael Porter Jr. My heart tells me they are on the verge of being a championship contender, my head is having a harder and harder time arguing.
This team is deep, talented, cohesive, special. It would take a special player to be worthy of inclusion. Denver’s front office and staff are doing it the only way it can be done in today’s NBA landscape. The Brooklyn Nets and Philadelphia 76’ers are developing in a similar fashion. It’s the only way to combat the Golden State Warriors or the draw of New York and Los Angeles to top players.
We’ve already won so much, some patience and we’ll win so much more.
